STEPPING BACK IN TIME
May 28, 2026Who says that we are not time travelers?
I am now 78 years old and have worked my entire life in creating my art world. I wanted to do
a major work this past year that would take much time, as I have slowed down my productivity
and I do have a large inventory of works in paintings, wooden originals and bronze limited
editions.
So, I stepped back in time……
I decided to return to what I did many years ago and created a work in detailed wood carving.
I had a piece of tupelo wood left from those days and I wanted to use it. I used to have 3 x 1
foot pieces sent to me though the postal service from a man in Des Allemands, Louisiana, in
the heart of the Bayou.
Hence, I created a sculpture about a foot square of a subject that I would see at my pond in
autumn. A particular moss covered rock had a chipmunk and a winter wren posing on it as
they together ate poppy seeds. The winter wren is one of my spirit birds and this subject
spiked my creativity.
The end result is THE POPPY PICKERS using the wood burner to color the subjects and
dyes to create the moss effects on the rock. It is made from the single piece of tupelo wood
in the subtractive style of wood carving.
